nurses him back to health their ill fated attraction is immediate. Adrian knows that consorting with Roxanne could cost him what is left of his reputation along with his beloved job, but he cannot keep himself away. Will Adrian and Roxanne be able to overcome society's expectations along with the discovery of Roxanne's unexptected parentage to be together no matter what?

In The Demon's Daughter Emma Holly has built up a mythology of a Regency Period Romance and blended it almost seemlessly with a science fiction story. The results are oddly intriguing. However, whether you are into regency romance or science fiction tales the reader needs to be aware that Holly's tales are not for the faint of heart. Extremely graphic descriptions cover numerous love scenes and if one isn't the type that likes these kind of explicit passages should definately not pick up this book. However, if this kind of writing doesn't bother you I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this story.

In an alternate history, Victorian England is now called Aver, and has a Demon poplulation to contend with. Adrian Phillilps accepts implants so he can police the demon population, but this further isolates him from his co-workers who are suspicious of the demon technology. He meets the

unconventional Roxanne McCallister, bohemian artist, a most unsuitable woman. Passion ensues and then love follows. I liked the world building a lot here, nice attention to detail. I also liked the characters Adraian and Roxane and found their connection believable. i did find that the book dragged a litle in the last third and the politics with the prince was not at all convincing. The ending was also too upbeat and noisy. I would have liked to end on a quieter note, but this is an enjoyable start of a series and I will definitely read the next one. Not sure that i will reread this one though...

I'm a big fan of urban fantasy books, and I do get what the author was trying to achieve with this one, it just didn't hit the mark with me. The introduction of a race of "demons" who have already developed a whole modern society with modern inventions into the human world of Victorian Era England
Show More
is an interesting premise and I do give the author credit for such a different plot. But, that aspect of it really fell flat for me. It almost seemed like the modern technologies were there only as a convenience to the author. How is a demon diplomat going to contact his prince in the demon world? I've got it! I'll just give him a video conferencing machine. Need to hold the heroine against her will? Just say there's some kind of "device" that can be put on the door to magically keep people out and muffle all sounds coming from the room. Want an erotic bathtub scene? Just give the heroine a modern bathroom. You don't have to explain how she could afford to come by such technology, it's fantasy afterall. Yes, I get it. It's fantasy. But, for me, fantasy has to also make some sort of sense, and most of this didn't at all.

Now, it could be that the whole thing didn't work for me because I just didn't care for the author's writing style. It seemed kind of juvenile in a way. In many parts, I felt like I was reading a YA book, and not a sophisticated adult urban fantasy. The sex scenes were a bit much. Not that I have a problem with sex scenes....I love a good sex scene. But, these just seemed over the top. The dialogue seemed out of place, not only in the sex scenes, but throughout the book. I can almost get behind the idea of modern technology in Victorian England because of the plot the author devised, but Victorian characters using modern dirty talk? Again, seemed out of place. Even if they can now use modern appliances, they're still Victorian era characters and should talk that way.

So, bottom line for me was that although the premise of this book was interesting and had promise, the execution left a lot to be desired.

I received this book in a swap. I expected to hate it, but I actually liked it.

The "Demons" are not really demons, they are another species discovered living in the far north in an alternate universe.

I wish the author had named them something else. It is misleading. I guess that she is cashing in

on the Paranormal craze.

It's not Paranormal it is Steampunk romance! But I don't think there is a category for that.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy.

But it is a good story.I skimmed past the sex scenes.

The main characters were very likable and I wanted them to end up together and happy.

Set in the Victoria era, Inspector Adrian Philip of Security Service, is more than a typical policeman, he is the keeper of peace between demons and humans. He has accepted implants in his body that enable him to have incredible strength, and to assume the powers of a demon for short periods. By
Show More
accepting this role of protector of both, he belongs to neither. Adrian is an outsider in both worlds. The story line is action-packed and filled with a deep cast, especially the lead couple.
