Description

Money makes the world go round, as they say... but HOW, exactly? Award-winning graphic novelist Eddie Campbell (From Hell, Alec) presents a fascinating journey into the wilderness of personal finance. With his trademark blend of research, anecdote, autobiography, and fantasy, Campbell explores how money underwrites human relationships, flowing all around us like the air we breathe - or the water we drown in. The result is a whimsical graphic essay, deeply grounded in Eddie's personal experiences with "the lovely horrible stuff," ranging from the imaginary wealth of Ponzi schemes and television pilots to the all-too-tangible stone currency of the Micronesian island of Yap.In a world where drawing corporate superheroes requires literally transforming oneself into a corporation (which is kept in a shoebox under the bed), we are in strange territory, indeed. Fortunately, Campbell's wry eye and vivid full-color artwork imbue the proceedings with real humanity, making The Lovely Horrible Stuff an investment that's worth every penny.… (more)

This is my first encounter with Eddie Campbell's work. I was impressed, though I understand this one is quite different from his other works. This is a somewhat autobiographical musing about money and how it affects the narrator's life and relationships. Money makes people behave in strange ways.

Graphically the book is an interesting amalgam of coloured photo-like and drawn frames, blurred and indistinct figures sometimes with drawn details. The first part of the book is about the author's family and how concern about money negatively affects it. The second part concerns the mysterious stone disk money used on the South Pacific island of Yap. This musing is personal and drily funny. The author mocks his own obsession with the 'Lovely Horrible Stuff'.

An interesting mix of memoir and history around the topic of money for an examination of what it means and how we can focus on it so much without really understanding it at all.

Anything by Eddie Campbell is an automatic read for me.

And this one is no disappointment. It's less experimental than his recent work and more just Eddie telling us stories.
