CALVIN by Martine Leavitt is an imaginative, coming-of-age novel exploring a teen’s discovery that he has schizophrenia.

Told as a letter written to Calvin & Hobbes’ comic book author Bill Watterson, the story traces a schizophrenic teen’s experiences with love and survival as he deals with

his mental illness for the first time.

Leavitt’s conversational style and sense of humor combine for an appealing alternative to the many young adult novels focusing on mental illness.

Librarians will want to add this YA novel to the growing selections available on teen schizophrenia.

Published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, an imprint of Macmillan on November 17, 2015.

Okay; not great. I had eagerly anticipated this read, but was underwhelmed.

The dialogue was a little off-putting at first; I had a hard time imagining a teenager talking that way. I put the book down after the first 32 pages, because I didn't feel drawn in. I picked it back up about a week later and didn't put it down until I was done. There were parts that made me cry,

parts that made me laugh out loud, and parts that made me ache for Calvin. This was a really good book, and I'm glad I didn't give up on it.

The Calvin & Hobbes angle and an unorthodox lake crossing elevate an otherwise generic road trip novel with appealing leads and mandatory quirky characters who pop up along the way.

For anyone who loves the comic strip "Calvin & Hobbes" there are plenty of nods to the strip and it's creator. Calvin, the hero of the story, is struggling with newly diagnosed mental illness and somehow the comic strip becomes the focus of how he sees himself and his connection to the world.

There's real empathy for Calvin who is struggling with a brain he can't rely on. And Susie embodies true friendship in this lovely novel.
