Have you ever been forced to wear an outfit that you felt embarrassed or silly wearing? If so, then Zorro knows exactly how you feel! Read along as Goodrich wonderfully writes and illustrates this story about Zorro and his trials of his new outfit. Along the way, he gains acceptance and makes new
Show More
friends-becoming comfortable and proud of his new outfit. This book is a Junior Library Guild selected book and is the second story in a series featuring two friends, Zorro and Mister Bud. Goodrich is fairly new to writing children’s literature, but he is not new to the illustrating scene. His work in many well-loved Pixar and DreamWorks movies such as “Finding Nemo”, “Monsters, Inc.”, “Shrek”, “Open Season” and others earned him four ASIFA Annie Award nominations. Finally in 2007, his work in “Ratatouille” allowed him to bring the Annie home. His illustrations in “Zorro Gets an Outfit” are simply perfect and will have any child falling in love with this captivating dog.

By using the classic picture book modality of illustrations on one page and short, simple text on the opposite page, author Carter Goodrich creates a well paced narrative that follows Zorro the pug as he is dressed in an outfit for the first time. Luckily for Zorro, his friend Bud tries to cheer
Show More
him up and he eventually comes to understand that there is nothing wrong with the fact that he is wearing a cape. Illustrations are simple, humorous, and done in watercolor with minimal backgrounds. The story focuses completely on the dogs leaving out any human motivations. Text is large and easy to read. Young children who have been having trouble fitting in will enjoy this book, as will dog lovers. This book would also be good for practicing just beyond basic reading skills. Highly Recommended.

An instant classic, Zorro Gets An Outfit deals with themes of bullying, individuality, and healthy self image. When Zorro's owner puts him in a ridiculous Batman costume and drags him to the park, he is absolutely mortified. All the other dogs mock him, which only increases his embarrassment. But
Show More
he soon meets another dog who is also wearing an outfit, but who exudes self-confidence and isn't the least bit embarrassed! Zorro quickly learns that self acceptance is the first step to achieving happiness.

A great book about the power of friendship and being true to yourself.

This modern fantasy tells the story of a pug named Zorro who gets an outfit (cape and mask) from his owner. He was very embarrassed and sad to have the outfit. All of the other dogs were teasing him for it. He then saw Dart, another dog with an outfit. They raced and Zorro became happy and proud of
Show More
his outfit. He then showed off to the other dogs. His companion, Mister Bud, was happy for him and that was all that mattered was his happiness.

This is a modern fantasy book about a dog who is embarrassed to go for a walk. Zorro, the dog, is embarrassed to go on a walk because his owner is making him wear a super hero outfit. When he leaves for his walk his friends and the neighbor cat laugh as he walks past. However, Zorro gets to the
Show More
park and finds another dog who is also wearing an outfit. This dog is very cool and Zorro feels better about his costume. The rest of the book Zorro wears his outfit with his head held high.

This modern fantasy book was about a pug who get an outfit. This was a modern fantasy because it was set in recent times, however it was form a dogs perspective. Although I tried to remain impartial, my love of pugs absolutely affected my love of this book. I thought the message of wearing your own
Show More
skin (or wearing whatever you have on) and being proud of it would be a valuable lesson for children. While I'm not sure how I would use this book educationally, I think it would definitely be a book to have in my library because it was very fun to read and was written in a clever way. Grade Appropriateness: this would be appropriate for children who are reading in the upper levels.

Genre: Fantasy
This particular book was definitely strong in characterization. The friendship between the two dogs is awesome and encouraging! It shows how we can all feel a little insecure about clothes, or outer appearances, but it isn't what you look like that matters, it is what you do. Carter

Goodrich shows that fully in his examples of these two dogs setting out for their daily walk and some super cool doggie moves. I could use this to help kids understand that it is okay to feel insecure, but that confidence can come from inside, no matter what we have in material things. I could also use this book as a fun way to get kids excited about caring about thei happiness of their friends and how they can support one another through times like what Zorro goes through.

The illustrations for this book are done in watercolor. This book is about a dog getting a costume from his owner and at first not liking it, but soon growing to love it because of the attention he receives from wearing it. Zorro and his friends go to the park and Zorro is first embarrassed but
Show More
after a new dog shows up in costume and challenges them to a race, he loves his costume. This book is fantasy because dogs are talking to each other but it takes place in a realistic setting. This book could be read by lower grade elementary school students.
