Concept Book. This book is an excellent book to start talk between infant and caregiver. It is full of black images on white backgrounds of objects recognizable to young children. There are no words in this book. The colors of black and white are the first interest to newborns and infants.

Hoban uses no words and only to beautifully help in the process of word learning in small children. This book is a wonderful tool to help give little ones a head start in word development and the high contrast in the colors will help stimulate their mind.

Black on White is a straightforward book for newborns and young babies. The high-contrast images draw their attention. It's not a book I'd recommend reading in the traditional sense, as in turning pages and telling a story. While a parent certainly can talk about the objects on the page or say how

they work, I've noticed babies will focus on a single page for minutes without the extra stimulation. Because of this, it's a good book for propping up during tummy time or when you need a moment to reheat your coffee.

Reality-based? Yes. The book contains pictures of everyday objects in a baby's life, such as a bib, leaf, and keys.
