Personally I actually prefer these stories --revised versions of pulp hardboiled detective stories -- to many of L'Amour's westerns for which he is better known. Some of the westerns seem pretentious (due to research?) and didactic while these stories are straightforward

There are plenty of tough cops, gutsy dames, and murderous mobsters, as well as lots of gunfire in this story collection. While the plots are not as complicated as other books in the hardboiled detective genre, I still found these tales entertaining.
