This is another great collection of Jack Prelutsky poems. These are funny poems that child and adult alike can relate to. The rhythm, rhyme, and repetition make all of these poems easy to read and enjoy.
I really liked these poems and found several that strongly reminded me of things my daughters

say to me. Being 5 and Don't Yell At Me were my two favorites.
My classroom extensions would be for the kids to

The poems I have chosen to talk about is a Little Bird Outside my window and Unhappy South Pole Penquin. The first Poem is about a bird who sits outside the window chirping and awakes them every morning by chriping away for long periods at a time. The next poem is about a unhappy penquin who is not
Show More
in a good mood and is having to learn how to be in a better mood.

I like this book because it has alot of really cute and funny poems about several different things and animals.

In the classroom I could use this poetry book when teaching about poems and personal experiences.

These poems all have something to do with trying to figure out what has been in the house. "Slow Sloth's Slow Song" is about a sloth who is fine with where he is. He lives in trees, but can't fly, and doesn't run. He is very slow. "My Sister Ate an Orange" is about a little girl who ate an orange,

but really it was a crayon. She chews it and digest the crayon entirely. Then she ate a yellow, a purple, and a blue.

This book can probably relate to some kids because some little kids like to eat their crayons or glue.

In the classroom, we can talk about how we do not eat the crayons. The crayons are used to color with. Then we could just draw a picture with our crayons.

Summary:
This collection of poems are random and funny. They talk about different things kids do such as, eat like a pig and be told to eat their vegetables. My favorite poem in this book was As Soon As Fred Gets Out Of Bed. It spoke about Fred wearing his underwear on his head and toes.
Personal

Reaction:
This was a long book of poems children could relate too. I liked it.
Extension Ideas:
I would have my students write their own poem.
I would have my students pick their favorite poem and draw a picture for it.

Review: Something BIG has been here is a collection of poems talking about funny things that kids do. My favorite was My Sister Ate an Orange because it means that she ate an orange crayon (along with other colors), not a fruit.

Personal Reaction: I like that it is a fairly long book so it could
Show More
entertain children for a while and that even if some are sad, all the poems are about things that someone in your class is bound to be able to relate to.

Classroom: 1) Everyone could pick funny things that they enjoy doing, like eat like a pig, and have the rest of the class try it, or write about it.
2) Everyone could write a poem describing something without naming it, and trade poems with their classmates. Then the other children could guess what the poem is about.

A funny and amusing book filled with poetry for children about everything from animals, people, food and nature.

This book could be used for young children to study poetry.

This is a collection of wonderful tales for kids. I like that the make up of material is very similar to shell silversteins book.

Summary:
This poetry book has a bunch of different poems that are great for kids. One of the ones I enjoyed was Mosquitoes, Mosquitoes. This poem was about how pestering mosquitoes to be and that you just want them to stop bothering you. Another poem in this book was called my Woolen Sweater Itches
Show More
Me. This poem was about an itchy sweater and how much it itched. The best part of the poem was the ending where it said "think about how sheep must feel." This last part really gets kids thinking.

Personal Reaction:
I really liked this book of poems because they were a lot of fun. Mosquitoes, Mosquitoes was a great poem because I could really relate to mosquitoes always pestering me. I also could relate to wearing a sweater that itched when I was little.

Classroom Extension:
1. In the classroom, the teacher could have their students make up their own poems and then share them with their classmates.
2. In the classroom, the teacher could have their students share what their favorite poem is and share as to why it was their favorite.

Summary: This is just a big book with a lot of different poems in it. It is actually fairly long so the kids could pick out different ones to read. These are all really funny poems and kids can most likely relate to them also.

Reaction: Since there are so many poems in here there are many different

things you could do with the kids, and it would actually keep them entertained for a while I feel like too. I feel like this poems are really funny too and the kids would really like it.

Extension: I would have the kids come up with their own poems that they could share with the class. This gives them the chance to use their imagination. Something else they could do is pick out their favorite poem that they enjoy reading that is not in the book and share it with the class and then tell why it is their favorite poem.

If you like Shel Silverstein you will like Jack Perlutsky. Something Big has Been Here is full of fun and silly poems that are imaginative an animated. The poems are not only engaging, but they are short making it easy to turn the page and continue reading until the end. The illustrations are
Show More
simply drawings down with a pencil and shading, but it allows just enough detail to help picture the poem in your mind. This is a great collection of poems that will engage children and help them grow to love poetry.

This is one of those poetry books that I keep in the front of my classroom and is so dog eared that I may have to replace it soon! You can pick up this book and read any of the wonderful poems in it and children of all ages will be laughing and happy to hear such funny poems. Jack Prelutsky has
Show More
such an imagination to sprout such tales of silly goofy subjects, I am glad to have found him early in my teaching career.
