Description
Discusses the rise of the Native American horse culture, the discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountains, and the Indian Wars of the 1860's. Deftly retracing a pivotal chapter in one of America's most dramatic stories, Elliott West chronicles the struggles, triumphs and defeats of both Indians and whites as they pursued their clashing dreams of greatness in the heart of the continent. "The Contested Plains" recounts the rise of the Native American horse culture, white Americans' discovery and pursuit of gold in the Rocky Mountains, and the wrenching changes and bitter conflicts that ensued. -- Amazon.

This book was a very informative source of information. I would only buy it if I wanted to learn about early Indian history. If I were not reading this book to gain knowledge I would not read it to be entertained. This is a hard to read book and only for in deaph research. I'ts rated at 16.3 for

This is an excellent - and I would argue very readable - contribution to the history of America's expansion west and its impact on Native Americans. West is a fine historian and a fine writer who captures the complexities of the interactions of Europeans and Native Americans in the Colorado area
