Description

Excerpt from Grete Minde: Nach Einer Altm rkischen Chronik The parents of Theodor Fontane, the author of Grate M inda, were both descended from French Protes tants, who had sought refuge in Prussia after the Revo cation oi the Edict of Nantes They were in temperament strikingly different from one another, contrasting much as the parents of the poet Heine, the father a light-hearted, irresponsible, and somewhat dashing gentleman who conducted a rather unsuccess ful business, the mother a woman of energy and prac tical common sense. Early in the year 1819 the elder Fontane bought the Lion apothecary shop in the little Brandenburg town of neu-ruppin, and there Theodor Fontane was born on December 30. Fontane spent his early boyhood in neu-ruppin, but the family removed in 1827 to the Baltic town of Swinemiinde where the father had acquired the Stadtapotheke.
