The newest in the series is good, I'm having trouble with how the author makes EVERYONE seem so fantastic. Each character is more powerful than the one before them and it takes away from the strengths of many of the truly awesome characters. I love how it combines myth, magic, and modern life. The

idea of historical characters becoming immortal is cool and I will definitely read the entire series. Not crazy about the writing style, but the concept and plot make up for it. Show Less

My Summary: In a prophecy written thousands of years before their birth, it was foretold that two children - twins - would be born that would have the power to save the world ... or destroy it. Sophie and Josh Newman are those twins, and together they've traveled with the Flamels around the world,
Now Sophie is alone with the Flamels, who are hours away from death and too weak to protect her. With only a few days left, Sophie knows the fate of the world is in her and Josh's hands....
The prophecy says one twin will save the world and the other will destroy it, and even though Josh's crossed over to what Sophie knows is the 'Dark Side', she's still unsure about which one she is.
My Thoughts: I've never read anything like Michael Scott's series - the mixture of mythology and fantasy is flawless, and his writing is practically magical. Seriously. I bought the first book in this series on a whim (this is the fifth book), and I've been hooked ever since then.
I really enjoyed the twists in this book, along with the addition of some new characters; although Josh's behaviour was a little irritating. I wanted to reach into the book and slap him or something (which is, as you know, physically impossible, but you know what I mean...). At one point it was like he was blind to what was going on, following John Dee and Virginia Dare like a lost puppy.
And the ending was amazing! I'm still trying to wrap my head around it (in a good way) - it's going to be a difficult few months waiting for the last book!
Final Thoughts: I definitely recommend the series to anyone who's a fan of mythology and fantasy; I especially recommend it to parents who are looking for a good series that they and their children will both enjoy. It's safe for kids 12 and up (there's no swearing, no violence, and no sexual stuff, so fear not!) and the writing is very intelligent, so adults won't feel out of place reading it. Do yourself a favour and check out the series :D

past in order to save the present world. The Warlock begins, where the 4th book ended, Josh (the gold twin), John Dee, and Virginia Dare are fleeing from Dee's burning office. Josh feels Sophie has betrayed him. in his eyes, by whipping a creature he had just brought into the world. Sophie thinks Josh has been corrupted by Dee and Josh feels Sophie has been deceived by the Flamels. The majority of our heroes are in Danu Talis, trying to ensure that it falls as it is meant to. This second to the last book in the series moves along quickly, with a lot of action, history, mythology and tension. The only disappointment is that the Twins are separated and this changes the tone of the books considerably. I can’t wait to get to the 6th and last book the Enchantress. 4 out of 5 stars. Show Less

The author of this novel used impeccable vocabulary to emphasize the plot points throughout the story. All in all, The Warlock was an outstanding book, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Some revelations were telegraphed and others took me by surprise. Poor Josh is being manipulated and hasn't a clue. I liked Billy the Kid and Machiavelli's big decision much more than most of those of Virginia Dare -- and none of John Dee's, of course.

I'm wondering if these books are better listened to than read... I think the story is great, but the writing feels unnatural and a little juvenile to me. The pace of the dialogue is usually off, and I'm thinking that hearing it narrated might fix some of that--people add inflections and pauses that
