compiler's commentary and interpretation of the works presented is not particularly valuable in its own right. But whatever the analysis lacks is counterbalanced by the reproductions of the illustrations themselves, and given that they were originally drawn from "stories without words", the lack of a coherent overarching narrative is a minor failing.
