I loved this book as a kid in the 8th or 9th grade. It spurned me on to read a whole summer of "escape" books. I haven't looked into it since, but as I remember it is filled with real drama, ingenuity, courage.

I actually bought this in high school during the popular run of "Hogan's Heroes." I probably thought it would be a madcap account of highjinks in POW camps! It isn't, but it is a serious and engrossing account of ingenuity and determination in the face of overwhelming odds.

Written by one who was there this is is the story of escape from he "unescapable" POW camp at Colditz. I have read this more than once and still find it surprising for the peristence and courage of the participants. five stars
