Flight, Volume Four

I always want to like these Flight books more than I do. There's a couple good stories and the art is generally good, but in large measure the storytelling is.....well, mostly pretty lame.

fact, many stories have few or no words at all.

There's not really any order to the series, so Vol. 4 was as good a place to start as any. Like any anthology, there were a few stories that I just could not get into - not my favorite style of artwork, and a story that didn't grab me - but they were thankfully few and far between. Among the better stories were some that charmed my socks off - Michel Gagné's "The Saga of Rex: Castaway" and Israel Sanchez's "Cyclops!" - and a few that were absolutely heartwrenching, like Kazu Kibuishi's "The Window Makers" and particularly Sarah Mensinga's "The Forever Box". I was also happy to see a story by Raina Telgemeier, whose graphic novel Smile I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the artwork throughout this book, and it was fascinating to see the huge variety of styles, and how each different type of art lent a different air to the story it was trying to tell. Very enjoyable. 4 out of 5 stars.

A charming collection of short graphic stories with a range of themes. Well worth checking out.

I always love the Flight graphic novels. They are such a unique and beautiful collection of short stories. This volume was very well done and I enjoyed the variety of stories throughout.

These are difficult to review because there is such a wide variety of stories, illustration styles, and themes.

Suffice to say there really weren’t any stories in here I disliked. Of course the continuing story of Rex (by Michel Gagne) and the story by Kazu Kibuishi are some of my favorites and have remained my favorites throughout each Flight novel.

I also really enjoyed both the illustration style and story for “The Forever Box” by Sarah Mensinga. I found the silly little story of “Igloo Head and Tree Head” by Scott C to be strangely charming and entertaining as well. There were many others that I enjoyed too.

Overall this was another wonderful anthology of graphic short stories. All the stories were well done and consistently good. The Flight series continues to provide beautiful and high quality graphic short stories that are creative, intriguing and entertaining. I will definitely continue reading the series.
