This is an adventure about a family going on a wild west vacation. Mark Teague does a fabulous job using "juicy" language to help my students get a vivid mental picture of the wildest vacation yet!

"It has a surprise at the end. In the middle of the book ask, do you believe Wallace is telling
the truth? Then ask again at the end of the story." - Janet Sharp, LM_Net

I wish I had a vacation as interesting as this kid!

When giving his BORING report about his BORING vacation... wait, no, that was somebody else. This kid's vacation included being kidnapped. By COWBOYS! And having to stop a cattle stampede! And being a hero!

Good rhymes, great fun, and cute ending

with a bull in time for show-and tell. Anybody who's had to suffer through the first day of school blues should get a copy :)

A schoolboy gets up in front of his class and tells about his summer vacation, which involved joining a group of cowboys and creatively stopping a cattle stampede.

Something always exciting happens to me when I go on vacation, just like Wallace Bleff, all though nothing quite like his adventures.

Also, this book is set in a western theme and I was born and raised in Oklahoma.

This would be a good book to read to the class at the beginning of the year and have the children share and tell about one thing exciting that happened during their summer. If the teacher wanted, he or she could even have them draw something they did during the summer instead. Also, the teacher could read this book during a western unit and have the kids come in dressed up as cowboys for the day.

Summary:
This book is about how Wallace Bleff spent his summer vacation. When he is reading about his vacation to his aunt’s house he embellishes his repot some. He tells the class that he was kidnapped by cowboys. He tells about learning to rope and ride and about having a barbeque and the

stampede!
Personal Reaction:
I thought this book was really cute. I live on a farm and I ride horses a lot so it was fun to read this aloud to my children.
Extension 1:
I would read this to my class at the beginning of the year and I would have them write a story of their own vacation
Extension 2:
I would also use this book in a western unit. I would have the class draw their own version of a cowboy!

A wild, imaginative tale of an adventurous summer vacation.

Genre: Fantasy/Poetry

Summary: When Wallace is asked to give his report on how he spent his summer, he spins a tale of how his parents sent him to visit his aunt out west because his imagination is too big. He is captured by a band of cowboys, who dress him in western apparel and teach him their

cowboy ways. They call his aunt from a payphone and she invites them all over to visit. If there is one thing the class knows is true about Wallace's story, it's that he does have a lot of imagination.

Funny rhyming book with cartoon-style illustrations about a boy's imaginary summer vacation with cowboys. Great illustration of a creative writing project.

This book is about a young boy with a wild imagine. He tells his story in rhyming mode. He is on a train to stay with his Aunt Fern for the summer and his train was attacked by cowboys, so he learned how to be a 'cowboy'.

Personal Reaction: I really liked this book. Even my kids who are young

teenagers liked it. I think that the flow of the book was perfect and it was just the right length.

Classroom Activities: With this book I would let the kids draw pictures of what they would think a cowboy would be doing out on the ranch. Maybe even let them color a picture of a cowboy, and decorate it the way they wanted to.
