Media reviews

Team adventures with the quirky group of paranormal investigators make for a different approach than the Hellboy-focused stories, but they’re just as involving.

Here we have Hollow Earth, the first B.P.R.D. story without Hellboy, and a series of shorter tales involving the other team members minus Big Red. After losing Liz (who had gone in search of a place she could learn to control her powers) and HB, the team is in shambles. Abe and Roger are planning

on leaving, but then they receive a distress call from Liz and go in search of her along with the newest member of the team, Johann Kraus, a physical medium who has found himself without a body and now resides in a specially made containment suit.

Hollow Earth takes the team into the bowels of the Earth as they reconnect and learn how to work without the man who kept them together as a family.

Along with Hollow Earth, we see Abe investigating a strange phenomenon in the middle of the Atlantic, and show how Roger was brought back to life by Abe as he dealt with some problems from his past. We also get a Lobster Johnson story, which is absolutely brilliant pulp.

Johann is a great addition to the current B.P.R.D. team, he Abe and Roger have a great chemistry with each other.

An excellent collection.

This was a fun read. I wasn't entirely sure what I'd think of the Hellboy team without Hellboy, but they manage to pull it off.

Good first volume, like the early Hellboy stuff it's a combination of backups, one-shots and the like. So some of them are better than others. Also, its continuity ties into the Hellboy story arc immediately preceding it, which I am not sure if I have actually read.

Good collection of stories following BPRD agents without Hellboy in sight (at this time Hellboy already left the BPRD).

First (and largest) story is Hollow Earth - saving Liz from King of Fear that dwells in the pits of the earth seems to be a thing to keep BPRD team together. In this story we

follow Abe Sapien and Roger together with Johann (new team member) as they enter the mysterious monastery (gateway to Agartha?) and finally go into the earth to save their comrade Liz.

Everything that transpires around them is only explained to the reader but team remains in dark - I liked that way of story telling a lot.

Other stories are single chapter stories but nevertheless also very good (I enjoyed one where BPRD tries to "sell" Abe instead of Hellboy (already left the team) to the client that needs help with weird occurrences on their transport ships - that conversation was hilarious).

Art is excellent, every artist left his own mark so to say but nevertheless collection was very balanced art-wise.

Recommended to all Hellboy-universe fans out there.
