Just when it seems that international crook Nicolas Fox has been captured for good, he pulls off his greatest con of all: he convinces the FBI to offer him a job, working side by side with Special Agent Kate O'Hare. Problem is, teaming up to stop a corrupt investment banker who's hiding on a private island in Indonesia is going to test O'Hare's patience and Fox's skill -- if the two don't kill each other first.

First off I must say I am a fan of Evanovich I love the Stephanie Plum series, I am also a fan of Monk, so I was expecting way more laughs in this one than I got. Most Evanovich books have many laugh out-loud moments and I am finding none in this one.

I am over 50% done with the audiobook and I am
Show More
giving up, this book is boring and the characters fall very flat, I was expecting more of a White Collar feel with funny maybe even irreverent moments and have gotten none of the above.

Life is too short to read bad books. Sorry Ms. Evanovich but I will stick to your Stephanie Plum series.

Kate and Nick are "The White Collar" team out to catch the bad guys. Lots of chemistry between the uptight FBI agent with the help of her retired father and the career criminal hottie working together to catch bigger fish. The whole thing was completely improbable as the assemble a team of misfits

to sail off to catch one of the most wanted. I'd rather have Stephanie Plum.

The Heist: A Novel

"What we are doing is more like a heist only with a person instead of an object. A successful heist is one that nobody notices until it's over and the thieves are long gone"

If you have ever read the novels by Time Dorsey or the early works by Carl Hiaasen you might like this
Show More
novel very much. I had hoped that it was going to have the romantic heat and comedic flare as the duet authors of Jennifer Crusie and Bob Meyer did with "Agnes and the Hitman", but in a way "The Heist" was even better.

This was a perfect beach/vacation read; light but not fluffy, funny but not overly slapstick, with a perfect female protagonist. Kate is the perfect blend of hard-edged ex-Navy SEAL and chocoholic with a bit of a crush on Nick. She just cannot admit it to herself yet!

The secondary characters, especially Kate's father Jake, are great foils with none of the overly fluffiness that Janet's secondary characters from her Stephanie Plum series exhibit.

I don't usually say things like this when I review books because most of the books I read would not be apt to appeal to a male audience anyway. However, the way this one was written, with a clever plot and some good butt-kicking will most likely appeal to both sexes equally. This will make this book a good value for couples! LOL!

This seems like this is going to be a very interesting team of writers. I spent some time trying to figure out just who was writing what part, but then quickly gave up as I was pulled into the interesting story of cons and government double-dealing. I did need to stretch my disbelief a little thin in some parts, but I needed to remember that this was entertainment and not deep literature1

The idea of conning the scummy con-men and paying back the people they stole from is just perfect - a sort of modern day Robin Hood at it's loosest and best interpretation!

This was really a fun way to spend a weekend and to get us ready for the next book in this series.

Take White Collar and cross it with the Leverage, mix in a dab of Miss Congeniality, and you'll have something similar to The Heist. FBI Special Agent Kate O'Hare is tenacious, bold, and not exactly girly. Con artist Nick Drummond is sexy, charming, chameleon-like and not completely amoral.

Kate's
Show More
mission is to catch Nick. Nick's mission is to remove priceless items from their owners and make them his. The FBI's mission, with Nick caught, is to use him to take down particularly nefarious criminals they can't get legally. The Heist is the first in the series of jobs, and while it's completely out there as far as believability, it's a cute, action-packed romp that should appeal to Evanovich fans.

I've read all Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels - most recently Notorious Nineteen last year. (FYI - Takedown Twenty is due out in November) When I needed something light and fluffy at the end of a long day. I do remember thinking at the end of Nineteen that the books were becoming carbon
Show More
copies, with a few names changed every time.

Well, Evanovich has teamed up with Lee Goldberg, (writer and producer for the TV series Monk among others) and penned the first book in a new series. The Heist was a nice surprise - a fresh, funny, light hearted little read that I quite enjoyed.

FBI Agent Kate O'Hare is good at her job - hunting down criminals. But the one that has continually eluded her for the past five years is Nicolas Fox - the ultimate con man. She finally captures him, only to have the tables turned. Fox is free on condition - that he team up with the FBI to catch a corrupt banker hiding on a private island. Traditional methods won't work; Nick's special skill set is needed. Kate now has to work with the man she's spent five years chasing. And together they'll have to pull the ultimate con job.

Kate is a great new character. She's tough, determined and feisty with a soft centre. And of course in trademark Evanovich style, she has an eclectic family backing her up. (Her dad is a personal favourite. Did you know there are sixteen ways to kill with a set of eyebrow tweezers?) Nick is an ingenious schemer who can smooth talk his way in and out of any situation. And of course, the other requisite element is that will they, won't they sense of romantic attraction.

The plot was lots of fun - I've always enjoyed the planning of crime capers. The back up crew was eclectic. I wonder if some of them will be brought back in future books? I liked Willie - a woman with attitude who can drive anything. You can see Goldberg's hand in the book - much of it felt like a light hearted television detective series, somewhat like Castle. That's a good thing.

Those looking for an entertaining light hearted read will find it here.
I did notice that the reader for the audio version of The Heist is my all time favourite narrator - Scott Brick. I had a quick listen to it and his inflection and interpretation would make The Heist even more enjoyable. I think I'll listen to the next in this series - The Chase- due out in February 2014.

Evanovich and Goldberg had fun naming their characters - O'Hare and Fox is a sly nod to Aesop's fable of the same name.

Cute. Typical Evanovich. Will this be another series?

A new Janet Evanovich series that looks like it'll be light-reading fun, more in the Stephanie Plum vein than the other supernatural branch with the Lizzy and Deisel series. Written with a screen writer, I think who was part of the Monk series. He should have caught Evanovich's tell when she Kate

Story Synopsis: Kate O’Hare an FBI agent and former Navy Seal has just made the biggest bust of her career. After five years of hard work she has brought down international criminal Nicolas Fox, and her reward is to be placed on, to her mind, a completely boring case. Things pick up, however,
Show More
when Fox escapes and leaves the country. With the help of a father, a former soldier and black ops participant, Kate begins tracking Fox, uncovering a government plot in the process.

Review: What fun! The pairing of Evanovich and Goldberg is a winner. This tale combines adventure and humor, reminding me of some the movies starring Sandra Bullock, in particular ‘Miss Congeniality’.

For a die hard FBI agent and former Navy SEAL, striking a deal and working with a known fugitive was going to stretch Special Agent Kate O'Hare way out side of her comfort zones. Having the talent to get what he wanted make Nicolas (Nick) Fox the perfect man to help do what the FBI and other law
Show More
enforcement agencies where not allowed to do, get some of the most elusive and wealthy embezzlers.

Book 1..... What a set up for a multiple book series. The concept leaves room for unlimited books, the combination of Janet Evanovich (writer of the Stephanie Plum series) and Lee Goldberg (writer of the Monk series) seems to lend to a interesting and detailed Con game full of interesting characters (that I hope they will bring together again) and fun international travel.

Oh my! Another wonderful set of characters, another hopefully on-going series and I have to say I am Hooked! The Heist isn’t Stephanie Plum by a long-shot but in some ways it’s better. I loved the story line, the wisecracks and I have a feeling soon all Janet fans will be casting this as a
Show More
movie, too.

Special agent Kate O’Hare has only one thing on her mind – arresting Nick Fox, grifter extraordinaire. Nick is behind some of the world’s most well thought out heists and she misses him by a hair every time. Some would call her obsessed. She would agree.

She finally gets her man only to find out he’s joined the FBI and is her new partner! Their job is to hunt down corporate thieves, corrupt bankers, etc in hiding and get back the money they stole. Putting the bad guy behind bars is an extra benefit.

Nick finds a team. Willie who can drive anything you give her. Boyd the zealous actor and others make up the hilarity and good deeds in this tale. It reminds me a bit of “Leverage” and, while everyone was good I especially liked Willie (DDs, sassy, no license to drive/fly/pilot boat necessary) – she was a total hoot!

So go get this one but first get hold of Pros and Cons; the short story that takes us into Kate and Nick’s world.

I enjoyed this book, which I might term "Plum Plus", more than I have the recent Stephanie Plum books by Evanovich. The addition of Goldberg to the team adds some desperately needed fresh air. A con man of truly admirable skill is paired with a female FBI officer in this new series. They also have
Show More
the hots for each other despite the fact that they are normally on opposite sides of the law. There are some really cute gags in this book, and I especially liked all of the ones related to Eunice Hufnagle I will be interested to see if the next book continues the promising start with which the series began. Read it and laugh.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into this book. I'm a fan of Janet Evanovich, but I just really didn't like any of the characters and I thought the dialogue was especially cheesy. I did like the idea of the story, so I do hope the series gets better.

I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich and I am not sure why so many are raving about this book. Frankly, the characters were, for the most part, flat and not well developed. There were males who were part of Kate’s team who all sort of blended in together and who became just names to me. In earlier
Show More
novels, the author does stretch the truth, but, for the most part, the experiences and actions are believable. In this book, there is very little credibility and the experiences of Kate and her team are just too impossible to believe, and this may be due to the story line or how the plot unfolds. One character I did like was Kate’s father, who played only a minor role. I wish he could have played a bigger role in the novel. In fact, I agree with one reviewer who stated he could easily be in a series of his own or could better be Kate’s partner. Frankly, I think he would be better than Nick was in this book. In later books, he may become like Lulu is to Stephanie Plum, but he just didn’t do that here. I see their lack of chemistry and mutual attraction/teasing between Kate and Nick as a serious shortfall in the book. Finally, I wonder whether the author, who has provided her readers so much in the past, has finally reached her apex and is possibly now going beyond her limits.

while this is a good book it does not have the naughty feeling of lust between the characters that she manages in other books, however I feel that the co-author has managed to gave it a better story line

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. Would it be Stephanie Plum meets David Niven or Jonathan and Jennifer Hart from the old T.V. series? It was closer to the second but with a hint of the first. Kate O’ Hare is an FBI agent who has spent years of her life chasing Nick Fox, a smooth
Show More
talking con man. She finally gets him and he manages to escape. She tracks him down in some ancient Greek monastery only to discover that the FBI engineered his escape so they could use him to catch a bigger fish. Kate ends up partnering with Nick and a crew of other folks to get a swindling hedge fund manager who took a half billion dollars and disappeared. They embark on an adventure that takes them all the way to Indonesia and back.
I really liked this book. Kate is a hard-nosed and competent agent with the only hint of Stephanie being her inability to eat without spilling food over herself. She has a loving father with an ex-Marine past but who still has contacts that come in handy for Kate’s mission. Nick is a charming, debonair, well-educated con man who is always looking for the next big score. I got a big kick out of the aliases he uses for his various cons. While there is a whiff of romantic tension between them, the primary theme of the book is the con and the danger it involves. The secondary characters are exactly that but we learn enough about them to be important to the story.
The book is written by the team of Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg and the two viewpoints blend seamlessly. You can see Mr. Goldberg’s T.V. experience in the knowledge he has of special effects and how they can be used. Both he and Ms. Evanovich are used to dealing with quirky characters and they keep that fairly subtle in this book. There is a definite sense that this is the first book in a series based on the ending. I hope so; I’d enjoy reading another book with these two characters.

I got a copy of (CD audio version) this book on the recommendation of a friend, and am so glad I did! Love Janet Evanovich and Stephany Plum and now I love Kate O'Hare and NIck Fox. Can't remember when I simply enjoyed a book more -- it's just a lot of fun! I'm assuming Evanovich worked on the
Show More
characters, who are charming and the good guys great company to hang out with, and humor, and Lee Goldberg on the plot which is delightfully zany...a classic caper, with fabulous dialogue! Can hardly wait for the sequel(s)!

FBI agent has been chasing a clever thief for ages and when she finaly catches him it turns out that the FBI have plans to use him, and her, to chase down criminals who have escaped the juristiction of the FBI. After a bit of dithering she decides to join this scheme and help them out. The fact
Show More
that she, Kate O'Hare, is attracted to him, Nicholas Fox, is beside the point.

To me it felt like a lot of the con-men turned good TV programs, nothing special, entertaining but nothing that would make me hunt up sequels, if I happened on them I'd read them but not really enthused.

5 STARS

I have had this on my TBR pile for awhile and realized that next week the new book is out. I loved it. It was funny, drama, twists around each corner.
I loved the characters. Can't wait till the The Chase comes out next week. Or tomorrow it is already on my kindle.

FBI Special Agent Kate
Show More
O'Hare is my hero. She is smart, strong and tough. She was a navy Seal before she joined the FBI. She is assigned to capture conman Nicolas Fox. She believes in catching the bad guys. Kate is willing to go far to catch him.

Nicolas Fox is a con man. He has complex cons. He knows a lot about Kate and flirts with her and makes fun of her. He is also attracted to her.
I admit I like him.

Their are a cast of characters that work with each group. Then their is Kate's family. Her sister posts information on facebook that Nick gets information about her. Their is her father who has been a soldier fighting all over the world.

Now Kate and Nick have to work together to bring bigger bad guys in. They face pirates, bad guys, and get their own crew together while at the same time Nick is still wanted. (It reminds me of Alias Smith and Jones ) Humor, action drama and bad guys helping to catch bad guys.

The setting for this book is all around the world. My favorite the chocolate café in Germany.

Fast paced book. I will read the next book The Chase this weekend.

I bought the book from book of month club.

I really enjoyed this beginning of a new series. The pace was great -- I couldn't put the book down for long stretches and it was fast reading. I'm going to look for the sequel now. Very different from her Plum characters. Good plotting (even if the situations and action stretch the bounds of

credibility) and smooth dialog make this one I would recommend..

A nice, quick read with some suspense, laughter, and a good story. I'm looking forward to Fox's further character development and the sweet relationship between Kate and her Dad.

Nice job, Me. EVANOVICH and Mr. GOLDBERG.

A fun adventure with light romantic tension between the two unlikely "partners" -a female FBI agent and a male con artist - who team up to get a bad guy. I am not a fan of the Stephanie Plum series because Evanovich tends to go way over the top with everything. At least in this first entry in the
Show More
series, her humor is put to good use, in small doses. The adventurous plot is acceptably over-sized to put the main characters and their cohorts in outrageous situations. Let's just hope the series avoids putting Kate in a never-ending romantic triangle with Nick and a future character. (Narrated by Scott Brick.)
